Entry 48: Stunning From All Angles
May 20, 2009

Busy at work. With dozens of local workers on-site, we're working hard at putting some special finishes on the outside of the club such as the beautiful cultured stone you see above.
At left and below, you'll notice we've put up a lot of the framing inside the club. Bold, curving walls flow throughout, connecting and promoting exploration.
The change rooms are coming along nicely, with the drywalling and mudding starting. Features include fashionable tiling throughout, innovative use of glass, and spectactular lighting. We've got some special surprises about these areas we'll reveal as they progress, which makes them so unique.
On the cardio deck, the concrete base is beginning to set and the wooden frame has been removed. We've been installing wiring throughout the back wall as well for some special lighting features and for the cardio deck itself.
Other things we've been working on are flowing shapes that will suspend from the ceiling at various parts. Of course, describing them in writing would be difficult, so we'll gather photos and drawings soon so we can post online.
Long story short, as we come together the following weeks, you'll see how the layout is not only very logical, but purposeful, open concept, and inviting. From specialized tile to lighting effects to the use of natural materials, the inside alone will be stunning from all angles. Best of all, this time and investment is really for your benefit, since we're confident you can take part in every facet of Xanadu regardless of your background.

Entry 47: Many Hands, Much Work
May 12, 2009

You'll notice in the photo above, the concrete floor has now been poured all throughout the interior of the club, and boy has it energized the group. With dozens of local workers on site each day now, walls are coming up, and drywalling and mudding has begun.
At left you'll see the full cardio deck, which is quite expansive, able to hold dozens of pieces of state of the art equipment for those of all experiences.
The concrete base has now been completed and the staircases are also now poured and completed. Of course, it can take weeks to properly set, but we're rolling ahead.
Also at work on the interior now is extensive wiring installation and electrical work, mechanical preparations, and installation of the interior duct work throughout the main area of the club. Insulation is now also complete throughout the interior.
Below, you'll notice we've now begun to add cultured stone to the exterior, and we're completing the original brick work that frames the stone throughout the outside. Windows are now sealed and we're preparing much of the stone work on the West wall that sits behind the club. We want Xanadu to look great from ALL angles!
We'll keep you posted on what all these features and materials mean for you as a member and why our comprehensive approach goes beyond what you may have experienced at other facilities!

Entry 46: Smooth and Set
May 5, 2009

Today we finished the pouring of concrete for our superb cardio deck. It's a majestic presentation where our state-of-the art equipment will go. We've chosen only products that can be used by the most members, from advanced workouts to friendly introductory movements. Plus, members will not have to search for their favourite equipment since it all is organized into one neat arrangement.
Outside we've been working on sealing the glass panes, and finalizing the coatings that go behind the stone work and brick work.
At the front picture below you'll notice we've now added brick along the front of the building, and we'll be preparing for our custom stone work which will begin in the coming days.
Where you see the yellow sheathing is a special area that opens the club out to the patio, namely where members are served natural drinks and snacks to help them start the day.
Also on the inside has been some steady preparation work for our beautiful flooring, which we will post pictures of, as well as the tiling to be done in the changing areas that will be stunning.
We've also finished the framing of the yoga room, mechanical areas, change rooms, and started the drywalling process in the curvy change room entryways.
As things go along we're making tweaks here and there to ensure the plans ultimately match our grand vision. With natural lighting, colours, stone work, water features, and beautiful flooring, things are coming together quickly and in one week's time we're told we will hardly recognize the place!
Our next entry we'll feature the inside colour scheme, details of fireplace features and natural lighting. By next week we will gradually reveal details such as our world-class saunas and steam rooms that are not found anywhere else in Canada. Of course, our email supporters will hear it first!

Entry 45: Internationally Recognized
May 3, 2009

We're excited about the buzz in the international community about what we're creating here at Xanadu Health Club. For over 3 years, we've been an international member of IHRSA, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association. This association of over 9,700 health clubs in over 78 countries is dedicated to helping communities benefit from fitness programs while at the same time researching how health clubs can serve you better.
As a member, we've done incredible research and planning over the last three years developing our concept and feeding off decades of local experience in serving the Windsor-Essex region. From supporting local workers to creating customized plans for those new to a "health club" experience, we've surely benefited from being part of a worldwide organization.
What was truly exciting for us came in January of 2009, when Xanadu was featured within the Club Business International magazine, the world's premier health industry trade magazine that spotlights the best and brightest ideas, trends, and new concepts and is distributed to thousands of management teams from around the world that are part of the IHRSA network.
You'll notice the photo in the article matches the entry we did on August 7, 2009 , when we gave out 2000 spruce trees to people across Essex County as part of our efforts for community members to "grow with us" during our construction. The article speaks of the results of our efforts, how it was accepted by the association as something unique and innovative and how executing this simple concept is an example of a true industry leader.
Click here to read the article.
It's superb to be recognized for the efforts made thus far to connect with the community and move Xanadu ahead of the curve, before we even open our doors! By using the feedback and support of our members, we'll not only continue to innovate, lead, and develop, there is no doubt in our mind others will notice the unique offering and style we bring to the table. Just thought we'd like to share!
Entry 44: Something to Lean On
April 28, 2009

We thought we would share this week in pictures and update this section a bit to show you what we've accomplished so far. We now have numerous trades working around the clock. Plumbers to electricians to designers to HVAC installers to cement workers. One big Xanadu family.
The big ticket item at least for us was seeing the walls come up this week in the change area section. Dozens of curving, flowing walls connect each room to the next, where both men and women have their own independent steam room and world-class sauna. We've revealed previously we are choosing the same supplier for our systems as the 2010 Olympic Games along with over a dozen 5-star resorts around the world.
In fact, our sauna quality, size and workmanship will officially be unmatched anywhere else in Canada. It's what makes Xanadu so different, and why we're proud to call this area home to our unique concept.
As you can see in the photos, the vapour barrier is complete on the outside and we are now starting the brick wall on the West wall moving around the sides and eventually finishing at the front.
Above the brick will be this beautiful cultured stone installed by local workers we simply love to support.
Below you'll see some of the crew busy working today on some cement work on the inside. With so many hands helping out right now, we are ensuring that we will get the required preparations done to launch by late summer this year. Details will be ready for when pre-sale begins in June. Send any questions via the INSPIRE US page.

Entry 43: Pouring the Floor
April 22, 2009
We wanted to do cartwheels across the property this week (but it was too wet) after the construction crews began pouring the flooring for the change rooms and entryway. It's so exciting because we can now visualize all the walls and special areas of the club. The underground plumbing is all complete, and our local HVAC suppliers and installers have been steadily working on the ventilation while our electrical crews are starting their work with the goal of getting ready to put up the interior walls in the next couple of weeks.
We took our time figuring out what final materials we will be choosing for the flooring but what we've settled on you'll be so happy with. We'll try to snap a photo of the materials shortly and post online along with all the real details about the club.
We're also proud to announce that pre-sale will be starting on schedule in June.
More information will be ready on how pre-sale will all work, where to go, when our hours will be and what types of things we'll be able to provide you when you come. Look forward to keeping in touch!
Entry 42: Pedal to the Metal
April 8, 2009
This week we've added some additional coats to the outside layering and are set to continue additional work on the exterior as the cold weather subsides and things dry up again. We've got plenty of time!
On the inside is where we've been really busy this week and will continue to be extremely busy as we now bring more and more trades into the fold.
Our email blast that goes out Thursday will show you some additional photos of our progress and a taste of the interior design that will be apparent throughout the club. Shown in the photo below is one of our trusted local tradesmen working hard to prepare the interior for the next wave of trades to follow.
We are also excited to ramp up our hiring efforts this week, as we will be starting the interview and training process this summer. Additional dates and details will be provided shortly.
Stay tuned also for photos of the exterior reveal, a showcase of our outdoor training areas, and our innovative open concept for our spinning and aerobics rooms.
Entry 41: Moving On Up
April 3, 2009
Besides our attention being spent on making sure the materials and colours we choose for the inside are as natural and eco-friendly as possible, you may have noticed the further progress we made this week on the exterior coating outside.
At the back of the building you can see now we've covered all the way up to the top, and have started to develop the South walls next.
On the inside, we've been working at getting the plumbing moving as quickly as possible, so we had to close down Advance Blvd briefly while we made some adjustments to the piping below the road surface.
By the end of next week we'll have our more concrete timelines in place and will have some exciting samples of the interior decor to show you. We just wanted to make sure you saw what we've been doing today!
Entry 40: Details to Come
March 30, 2009

With the Spring weather upon us and the ground beginning to dry, we've been working diligently last week starting on the surface preparation for the exterior. Rosati Group has been superb working around the clock to prep the inside and outside of Xanadu so we can open as soon as possible.
You can see in the accompanying photos the glass has been installed, various stone work has started which will provide a strong foundation, and we've begun putting an initial coat on top of the yellow sheathing barrier that we had up all Winter long.
With the ground drying up and the temperatures becoming more friendly, we're looking to provide a number of special details to you by June, 2009:
- Details of the upcoming pre-sale slated for June, 2009 including location and dates
- Previews of the interior of the club, including eco-friendly materials, sketches, updated construction photos as work progresses, and special details about why we've decided on the items we have
- Snapshots of the special equipment we will be bringing in that no one else in North America has or will have by the time we open our doors
- Details of what our membership packages include, such as facility features, hours, special events
- A blueprint of the club broken down into regions so you can see the various aspects of our design and why it will be inviting, friendly, and open like nothing you've seen before
- An anticipated schedule for our indoor and outdoor programs, including spinning, aerobics, yoga, pilates, special classes and learning sessions
- Information about a very special area of the club that is also unique to our concept, one that every member of our facility can take advantage of and come away with something practical
- Details of our outdoor training areas and vision, along with specifics of what our specialized programs will offer to those new to the health club environment
- An interactive look at the full service offering we will provide that puts everything you need to take care of your health all in one place
- A summary of the hundreds of letters of support from visitors such as yourself as to what we are setting as out goals to accomplish (based on the feedback) and how we will meet them

Entry 39: Clear Skies Ahead
March 17, 2009
With spring creeping up to us this week, we can tell you're as anxious as us to see some more movement on the construction site. As the grounds dry and the glass settles into shape, we've accelerated the interior work starting this week to get the initial walls prepared and the flooring nice and level.
It's been quite fun the last couple of weeks mix matching colour palettes, getting feedback on textures and testing out different finishes for longevity and luster. Of course, these had to be just right.
Ultimately since this is YOUR place to meet your goals and take charge (with our help if you wish) of your health, we'll want YOUR input as well once we narrow down our selections. Here are just a few of the hundreds of comments sent to us since our process began:
""I just wanted to say, that i appreciate everything you guys do, for the health of people and for the community! Your enthusiasm is contagious and I would be proud to be a member."
"I've been to the local gyms on a free trial but I am eagerly awaiting Xanadu and all the wonderful things you offer. Would love to see the interior as you are completing it. Please????"
"Never doubt for a second that there is excitement around what you guys are doing. I'm open to something new, something fresh, and Xanadu really feels to me that is what I will will be getting."
"It's amazing to hear Xanadu will have classes covering many different styles. I would love Xanadu to be a destination to come to for an evening to relax or learn something new.
Keep me posted this summer"
Long story short, this spring we focus on the flooring, plumbing and electrical, framing, drywalling, tiling, woodworking and everything in between. For example, the exquisite changing and rejuvenation areas are to provide comfort, freedom, relaxation, and peace of mind. In fact, we'll reveal this Spring our full blueprint, and allow you to explore each major region of Xanadu and how each will be perfect for what your needs are, regardless of fitness level, age, challenge, or goals.
By late Spring, we will provide a full detailed list of all of our amentias and programs before the launch of Pre-Sale season, and we will also provide a definite Grand Opening date as the interior and exterior construction nears completion. From hear on out there are certainly clear skies ahead.
Entry 38: Strong Features
March 4, 2009

Hooray! At last a sign of spring coming near ...you'll notice our front entrance now has our custom glass installed as of today and boy are we excited. What this means is that the inside will finally be fully sealed from the elements and we'll be able to get the trades moving quickly to work around the clock getting the surfaces prepared inside.
In fact, the email to go out later this week will now show glimpses of our detailed plans, such as the textures and colours we've chosen in consultation with supporters like yourself. For example, we think it is only fair to use natural materials as much as possible and conserve waste during construction.
As for our final timeline, by next week, we'll continue to fine tune our interior materials and as the walls come up and the inside takes shape, we'll provide regular updates as to what is going on and what you're really looking at. We want to make sure you can fully visualize the concept of Xanadu before we get into pre-sale season, which is when our membership packages will be publicly revealed.
Of course, we're always eager to hear feedback about what you feel is important to you and the challenges you face. We want to be a solid partner you can depend on that can help you meet your goals, and we'll ensure that attitude and assistance is available right from day one - the way it should be.
Entry 37: A Quicker Pace
February 20, 2009

While the Winter weather draws to a close, we can't help but anticipate putting elbow grease into finishing the outside of the club and so the first order of business next week is installing the rest of the glass for the front entrance. At the same time, the local trades hired from across the region will be in and out working on the interior in March with an accelerated timeline to get Xanadu open as soon as possible. With things coming together so quickly now, we're simply astounded at the great feedback we've received from our supporters as to what they want to get out of Xanadu.
With the speedy schedule ahead of us, we'll be looking to give the inside scoop as to what Xanadu will soon fully look like and why our revolutionary layout and equipment will make it easier for you to get on the path to healthier living and healthier thinking. The way we see it, Xanadu is a place that brings peace of mind, and so finding classes that fit your schedule and equipment you need should be trouble-free.
For example, one of the last emails we sent out some time ago also mentioned how our saunas and steam rooms will be able to stand the test of time ...after all, Las Vegas resorts and the 2010 Olympics use the same supplier. We also mentioned about a large outdoor patio that will be open to all members, willing to cater to many cravings or thirsts.
As we move forward at full force this Spring, you can expect that we'll provide concrete facts about what Xanadu membership will fully offer you and why this is certainly unlike any other facility in the region.
By working together with you and by listening to feedback, we will not only make sure Xanadu is built the way our members desire but we'll ensure that the door will continue to be open for suggestions and improvements for years to come. Let's just say our bigger plans only just begin once the opening day arrives.
Entry 36: Well-framed
February 8, 2009

There have been a couple comments as to what we've been busy doing during these last couple of weeks. Undoubtedly, you won't see a barrage of equipment out when its still sub-zero temperatures, but rest assured things are still progressing well for us to hold our pre-sale this spring and open by mid-2009.
In the photo above you can see the new front panels of glass as well as the steel framing that surrounds the front facade where the glass will be installed in 2 weeks. There were just so many custom cut panels we had to do it in stages, but they are fresh on their way to the construction site.
One thing we have noticed is with the snow melting a bit, the parking lot has become like a large playground, where we are tempted to splash around in the puddles until we're called inside for hot cocoa. Unfortunately, the tires on our trucks aren't letting us through as easy as we'd like, so we'll let the water settle down a bit before we try anything fancy.
We also spent this week training how we'll make sense of all of the information that Xanadu will be holding about our programs, events, classes, and member lounge, so we've got back into town with a full list of things to be doing these next couple of weeks.
As mentioned previously we want to focus on the interior while the season dries up and the sun comes out more regularly. Next on the list for the interior is finalizing the surface materials and colours. We've got some fabulous input from some local supporters who want Xanadu to be as effective as possible, and we'll be sure to post it as well as the weeks progress.
Enjoy the remainders of the season and keep your chin up, as always! We're here to stay. Oh, and the next email to go out (at the end of the week) will show even more glimpses of our plans for Xanadu.
Entry 35: Beauty on the Inside
January 26, 2009

Since January 10th, we've been really busy here at Xanadu as we now shift gears during the winter months and focus on completing our interior. After all, it will take a good three months for us to get the interior materials prepared, and have the surfaces ready to put our shiny new equipment in place.
Up to this point, we're happy to report that our glass is now installed and the framing is being completed on the majestic front entrance where a rounded glass facade will fully shield us from the colder winds. We've been proud to have a local, Canadian supplier of the glass materials, Bayview Glass, shedding some light (literally) on our project and being involved in the installation. We certainly had them working!
Up to this point, our priority was to fully enclose the building to allow the trades to come in and do their magic work. As you can see in the photo shown above, the interior of Xanadu right now looks a little bare, but only temporarily. As of today, Monday, we've completed our bidding process on the interior and will be making firm decisions in the next few weeks as to who will be involved in this spectacular project to bring our unique, innovative vision to reality.
In other news, we'll also be sending out another email on Wednesday with some specifics about what features the Rejuvenation areas of the club will include - which is where you will safely store your items you bring with you and where you'll find private areas to rejuvenate, relax, and rehydrate your body and mind. Of course, you'll be able to decide what features you want to use when you use such facilities, and we'll make sure they are always fully operational right from the day we open our doors.
As a side note, if you have given your emails to us recently, we'll make sure you won't miss any of the previous facts that we've sent out to our supporters. After all, as a fellow member of the Xanadu movement, you won't want to miss the exciting details that are being released on a regular basis.
Entry 34: Glass Half Full
January 10, 2009
There is something about natural sunlight that perks us up on a dreary day, gives us energy, makes us more productive and improves our general mood. We decided when our design process began over two years ago that natural lighting needed to be a big part of the Xanadu experience. Not only does it provide a natural source of energy, but natural lighting will mean we will have a smaller carbon footprint, will require less energy to power the health club, and will mean use of fewer artificial light sources that impact the environment during production.
Now tempting as it may be, we had to fight the urge to add windows onto every surface. In fact, there was quite a bit of planning involved to make sure the sunlight would produce the effect we were looking for. After all, natural light can produce reflections, glare and heat so we invested a lot of time researching and planning our equipment placement to make the environment inside Xanadu is as comfortable as possible.
Truly, having natural lighting will ideally create a more positive feeling while inside Xanadu, and will strategically highlight many of the exciting programs we have to offer. By way of a hint, we have one room whose exterior wall is all glass and serves a very special purpose - something completely unique to the area.
We'll continue to update you with progress as to what we've accomplished and our next email will detail further facts about our status so you can stay on track with where we are. We look forward to hearing your comments and thank you for your considered support.
Entry 33: This is Your Year
January 1, 2009
2009 was a busy year for every one of us. The highlight for us at Xanadu was making some big changes in response to hundreds of questions and comments from supporters all across Essex County. At the community parades, we showed our support and revealed the official Xanadu concept for all to see. In the summer, we gave away over 2,000 trees to supporters of all ages and backgrounds and proved that we could fight the urge to be a couch potato in a unique area race. In September, we broke ground, raised the steel in October and erected the exterior vapour barrier by November.
2009 is a pivotal year, but not just for Xanadu. Yes, all the loose ends get tied up on our end and we will be finishing the interior and exterior within the next several months. More importantly, 2009 will be the year supporters such as yourself will gain the help needed to make goals and be empowered to meet them. It will be the year that the idea of living healthy becomes attainable, becomes comfortable and becomes a way of life - mainly because we'll equip you with everything you need right from the start. Yes, this is YOUR year. By simply visiting this website to learn more about our innovative approach, you've proven that you're not simply making a "resolution" to live better. You're ready for a team effort.
Starting today, if you have provided an email address to us you will have received exclusive information regarding one aspect of our unique approach. Our goal is to have all supporters fully aware of what membership at Xanadu includes well before the time we open our doors. Emails such as the one sent out today will provide specific details as to our programs, equipment, layout, features, events, and pre-sale. We look forward to getting to know you better this year.
Entry 32: Happy Holidays
December 22, 2009
We've been busy these past couple of weeks tying up the loose ends to prepare for the burst of activity that will begin in January on the interior of Xanadu Health Club. Rest assured, we are certainly well on track to open by mid-2009.
We wanted to take the time today to thank you for your ongoing support and interest. We have received hundreds of questions from supporters over the last 12 months and look forward to providing the clear answers you are looking for starting in January. We'll be featuring key facts about what Xanadu membership will offer you, how we will help you accomplish your goals and a preview of the dozens of exclusive programs that Xanadu will be offering groups, couples, and individuals of all fitness levels.
More importantly, we sincerely wish you and your families happy holidays and that you gain the time together as a family to reflect on what is important to us all - our relationships, our friendships, our family bonds, and our ability to come together to support each other in challenging times.
From our family to yours, have a safe holiday and we'll look to hear all about it in the new year!
Sincerely,
Samantha, Simone & George
Entry 31: Warm on the Inside
December 8, 2009
When we get a chill it is always great to grab a warm blanket, a cup of hot cocoa and insist that we do absolutely nothing until we are warm again. Well, at least in a perfect world.
With it being colder outside, we've decided to make good use of a construction heater this week so our team members busy on the construction don't have their hands freezing on us. Plus, it will make sure we aren't making excuses ourselves about not wanting to do anything until we're warmer. As you can see in the picture above, we've completed the wrapping around the building to keep the heat inside. It's as if Xanadu has already become an oasis from the elements!
We're actually excited about the first signs of winter coming upon us because it means we are consistently closer to new progress at the construction site. We're also excited because we will soon be able to let the word out about all the wonderful things that we have in store.
If you are not already signed up with the Xanadu Movement (by providing your email address), we encourage you to do so, because we will be releasing exclusive details as to what will be going on inside during the winter and spring. You'll find specific details about our programs, the design of the club, equipment we will have and special events we will be holding throughout the year. By providing us with your email, you'll really hear it first. We've also got some great ways for you to get involved in the new year so Xanadu can truly become the place you deserve.
Next step from here is setting up the equipment inside to allow us to finish sealing all the joints from the inside and then we'll start making plans for the glass that will begin to be installed in about 6 weeks.
Entry 30: "Spare the Tape, Spoil the Job"
November 29, 2009
Red Green on the Red Green Show was famous for saying "Spare the Tape, Spoil the Job". Of course, he was referring to duct tape but the idea was the same. Tape can be an important part of a project and while we are not using it to hold a steering wheel in pace or an electrical wire, you will see in the above picture red outlines across the exterior vapour barrier (which we call sheathing). Normally we don't condone any red tape when it comes moving forward with our project, but this time its an integral component.
You'll see that the final vapour barrier is all in place across the front entrance and on the right side of the building shown. The red tape in this case seals the vapour barrier along the joints and helps the building frame resist mold growth and humidity.
In other news, we've begun pouring the first coat of our parking lot, however the moisture in the area proved to make it a little tricky. We'll keep you posted on progress on that note. Regardless, you'll see the curbs have been poured and the crews have been busy smoothing out the surface of the ground in the meantime.
The roofing has been progressing well and Rauth has been wrapping things up the past couple of days.
In terms of the windows, we've been busy this weekend sealing the windows so we can begin progress in the new year on what will go inside.
So, that's our construction recap. Now, in terms of supporters such as yourself, we will be providing updates to your email addresses if you have signed up with us on our registration page. There you'll find exclusive information regarding tips and things you can do to prepare for our arrival in the new year. With presale starting early 2009 we will be on track to open our doors by mid 2009 which means we will need your support, input and assistance to make this project a success.
If you have not already signed up with us, please do so! It will allow us to communicate to each other as the weeks quickly progress. By January, the pace will only get quicker and we will have numerous opportunities for you to help us not only get the word out but learn what is important to you and set you on your path to make and meet your personal goals.
Entry 29: We're Positive
November 18, 2009
We bundled up today to grab this photo of the progress at the construction site. You can see the roofing conveyor of Rauth Roofing at center, unloading supplies to the crew up above. At the top right, two team workers provide some finishing work on the rounded steel structure that makes up the front entrance to Xanadu. As of this point, the parking lot is a little muddy from the rain we had, but all the hard work underground is finished and work is continuing on the plumbing that will keep our landscaping well watered and green. It's interesting that with traffic diverted down Advance Boulevard due to construction at Patillo Road, we could see the drivers turn their heads, eager to see the progress that has been made.
One aspect about our vision is our drive to be positive. When we say "our" we mean those of us here at Xanadu and supporters such as yourself. It's a team effort. No doubt we get fooled into thinking that rational thinking involves lowering our expectations and dwelling on the negative. Is this right? No. At Xanadu we'll be able to help you see how to focus your thinking on the positive ways you can approach your healthy living plans. For example, some positive statements you could make today include:
- I have time for anything I am committed to.
- My metabolism is getting faster every day.
- I am 100% responsible for my results.
- I can do it.
We actually have quite a list that will help you stay motivated once you get started on your program, because we feel much of the battle is on establishing the right mind set, the right goals, and the right expectations.
Entry 28: Game Plan
November 13, 2009
With the weather being up and down this week we found snapping some progress shots to be a little challenging. Nonetheless we snagged this photo shown at right during lunch time today to show the curbing now in place in the parking lot. During the last couple of days, work began on the permanent roofing and stone has been distributed across the parking lot in preparation for the first coat of asphalt.
Now, despite our best efforts, it does seem that Winter is in fact coming. We thought gathering a petition of names could have slowed it down a bit, but we're told that we'll have to simply bunker down and get through it. With that epiphany, we'll be accelerating our timeline so several things will be in place before the cold sets in. For example, the sheathing will keep the cold front out and our ideas fresh. The permanent roofing will allow us to start our interior preparations by late December. The parking lot preparations will save our vehicles from getting too muddy while we go back and forth. Finally, we'll be working to have our custom glass imported in and put into place by December. The impact of it will be absolutely stunning.
So that's what the plan is going forward this week. To those of who who have provided us with your contact information we thank you for your support and we will be in touch next week with our next mission together.
Entry 27: Curb the Status Quo
November 7, 2009
We thought long and hard this morning about what the Xanadu concept is really about. We know supporters such as yourself see that we'll be different in a number of ways when compared to the traditional "gym" or "fitness" facility. When we think of the term "gym" we tend to recall the feeling of shear dread when we walked in, alone, not even knowing where to begin. Yes, perhaps we had a paper with a list of exercises but what ever did that mean? Would it work? Would we be able to measure the results?
There was always this feeling that when we worked out, the environment was against us. As if people were paying attention to us for all the wrong reasons. So to us, Xanadu was to become something special, to be the start of something new.
Surely, our plans are ambitious, and if we were doing this alone perhaps the outcome would have been the same as the status quo. Over the last 14 months, though, we've recognized the importance of getting supporters like you involved in the process. To grow with us, to help us define our goals, and to give us a clear picture as to what you actually need. From the ground up we certainly are building together a place that is focused really around what will assist in ways that go beyond simply a promise of better things.
So in the pictures we chose for today, you will see great progress has been made over the last two days. It puts our words into actions as we inch closer to our opening. We've completed the sheathing around the East and North walls and are focused on preparing the large rounded entrance for the specialty glass that should arrive by December.
In the parking lot, crews have been pouring the curbs around the entrance and several "islands" that will be arranged around the property. On Monday, work is to begin on the permanent roofing, care of Rauth Roofing. A locally-based firm, their roots in the business proudly date back over 60 years. Following that, we will be spending next week finishing the curbing and will prepare the stone in the parking lot for initial paving. Glad to see things moving along so well!
Entry 26: Full Speed
November 4, 2009
Just over half of the Xanadu complex now has gypsum sheathing in place, creating a solid, protected shield.
Next, we look to finish covering the main entrance and the North wall. The rounded entrance will eventually will be encased in glass, allowing natural light inside and creating a welcoming gateway to what lies inside.
Essentially think of us as a team, whose mission is to create a smooth transition for you, a comfortable place for to meet your personal goals, and to create ways to interact with us along the way.
At top left you will notice two hard-working team members looking out at our parking lot area, which will soon be cleared of the wetness we received earlier in the week. Stay tuned for ways to get involved.
Entry 25: Yellow for Energy
October 31, 2009
What a perfect colour to wrap our complex in at this stage in the game. Interesting enough, yellow is said to convey the thought of activity and energy. Spontaneous and full of action.
As you can see, we've been moving quickly to get things in order before the colder weather comes upon us.
Thankfully today we were blessed with 70 degree weather which helped keep our spirits high and the construction site full of warmth. You'll see above left that we even caught a rainbow in the lens while snapping a photo of the front entrance. Thought it was a great photo to share.
So, this weekend, we challenge you to find something yellow or even when you see something yellow, think of where we are right now - full of energy and willing to make a difference.
Entry 24: Sheathing
October 28, 2009
Cozy, warm, and protected. That's the goal of our next major phase of construction - protecting the complex from the elements, from outside influences, and from frigid temperatures. After all, we want to get cracking on the interior this winter. (Alas, winter is coming...)
They call the material being applied "gypsum sheathing", which protects against moisture and challenging weather. Not even a Category 5 hurricane would make this stuff budge. Really.
The name "sheath" actually comes from the word "protection". A sheath is what a knight would return his sword to in order to protect it. A sheath can also be described as something tight-fitting (such as a piece of clothing) or as the tissue that surrounds a muscle or nerve fibre. Nonetheless, we think it is a fitting term because it is what will keep Xanadu safe, secure, and intact, much like a warm hug that lasts all winter long.
Come to think of it when you first get a chance to step inside to see what we will have to offer, it will be like we are the sheathing - protecting and guiding you and providing a shield from all the fitness myths and conflicting things you've heard. Obstacles that may have gotten in your way? We know some shortcuts around them.
The long and short of it is we'll actually be available to help in so many different ways. Meanwhile, your continued support is greatly appreciated. You helped get us to where we are and you will be our driving force when we open and in the days beyond. Together we will change the way we think about health and create something that finally provides what you've really been looking for.
Entry 23: Well-Rounded
October 25, 2009
Being well-rounded is seen as a positive character trait. The idea is that if you know a little about everything, you become more confident, conversational and well-developed. Having a grasp of a number of topics gives you perspective and natural respect.
Today seeing the rounded face (shown at right) take shape at the construction site was like seeing what started out as an empty field take shape and become better developed.
For example, to be well-rounded involves having an open mind. It involves reading, learning about current events, seeing what is being talked about in entertainment, experiencing culture and traveling. Being well-rounded provides a way not only to understand what your acquaintances are talking about, but it helps expose yourself to different ideas, different trains of thought and perhaps to things you didn't know you were interested in.
This project that we are building together is like that journey into bettering yourself. For us, at least, it is opening us up to all the ideas that Xanadu will bring about into the health club world. Things that go beyond the typical "gym'. The thought of providing different types of programs while supporting what you know and love.
See, our vision is more to do with living, making our services tailored to people of different ages, backgrounds, fitness levels, experience and dreams. Together we will continue to grow. Just look at how far we've come so far!
Entry 22: Coming Together
October 24, 2009
How do you keep your chin up when everyone seems to be gloomy these days? As far as we can tell people still find ways to be optimistic. For example, when our friends and family have a special celebration. When a new baby is born. When our children grow a little older. It seems no matter how hard some things look sometimes, we always are motivated to come together. To show that we care, and to remember what makes us happy.
This is an important time to realize what Xanadu will provide goes beyond the building and any amenities - to be fair, it's an impressive list. Xanadu really is about pioneering the concept of health.
Will Xanadu's approach be different than a normal "gym" or "fitness centre"? Yes. How? Not only is our offering unique, but we make a solemn promise that we will have ways to walk you through realistic goals and make sure you get there. When you get sidetracked, we'll be here to pick you back up. When you stay on track, we'll be here to pat you on the back. We all have our days.
Something you will appreciate is that we will be keeping our promises when it comes to proving the stereotypes wrong.Just think of even our 0.8 mile track and what doors that will be opening for us. At the picture above you can see we've paved a good portion of it and have started to prep the landscaping that will surround. We're shooting to have that all ready by the time we're ready to open next year.
In short, we thought our recent steps taken at the site and in our planning for the new year speak well of the concept of coming together.
Essentially, our motivation is working and growing with people who dare to dream, such as yourself.
It is what drives us to continue during the colder days and at least we know it will help us through the winter months! Strength in numbers, they say.
Entry 21: Girded
October 20, 2009
Who would ever be excited about an entranceway? It's a good question. We had to think about it ourselves as structural blocks were being put in today in preparation for the entrance into Xanadu.
We see the entrance as a reflection of what is going on inside. Thus, we've made the first structural element that ones encounter just that - open, sound and supportive. Now it may not look like much now but we know this major step as part of the construction finalizes the main shell of the building and allows us to move forward.
Continued work today was on laying stone in the parking lot area as well as prepping the main water lines. We've also been preparing the foundations for the light posts that will be throughout the property as well as continuing our landscape planning.
The exciting part of all this as well was choosing the right type of material that will actually be put in place at the entranceway. We can't wait. Really.
So next up is continued work on the parking lot, some general maintenance on the construction area and some additional structural touches that need to be put in place before we move on.
Entry 20: Enthusiastic
October 18, 2009
It's great to see community feedback as more and more see all the commotion on the construction site and become eager to learn about what we represent.
It is times like these that we become very enthusiastic as to where we've come in a matter of a few weeks.
Actually, it gets us thinking about where we are going in the weeks to come. Trucks are moving in and out, clearing the parking lot area and prepping the surface. Continued work on the walking track will also be underway as we start the naturalization of the green areas to either side of the path. Additionally, we've been busy grabbing candid shots of the bunch of us throughout all the heavy lifting. Good thing we know to lift with our legs!
Which brings us to another revelation - we've got a neat opportunity coming up that will tie in all the work so far with the vision of our future. We'll post more about that in the next week or so.
Entry 19: Spreading Out
October 16, 2009
Okay, so yesterday was a little bleak with the spotty rain and cloud cover. Just when we thought it was safe to peek outside...the rain would come back. It was tempting for us to simply spend our time resting. After all, we've been running around quite a bit. Instead we simply planned for what we wanted to accomplish today and we're glad to say things are moving quite speedily along.
With all the trusses in place today and the steel structure getting its final touches together, we moved focus towards preparing the space where cars (and by extension, bicycles, SUV's, vans and mopeds) will be quietly waiting for their owners. We see it as a lesson of patience for these vehicles anyhow. We put all this effort and time into keeping them maintained. Doesn't it make sense that we maintain ourselves from time to time? We think so.
Entry 18: Thankful
October 12, 2009
Have you ever taken the time to just reflect? Sometimes we sit out at night by the stars and look up, thinking about what was accomplished during the day and reflecting on the things that we are thankful for in life. Today's sunset was simply brilliant, and it felt so right to be here, at Xanadu, seeing the sun skip across the structure ever so slowly.
Soon after, the light disappeared and there Xanadu sat, awaiting a new day. It's funny when you think about it, that finding a brief moment to simply think is so hard to come by these days. Perhaps we will try to do it more often.
Normally we would be excited for Monday to come rolling in so we can see what further progress can be accomplished, but tomorrow will be a day of rest. We think it would be safe to say that the workers who have been so busy really need it. So a day of rest it is.
To the families in Windsor, Essex, Tecumseh, Lakeshore, Kingsville, Belle River, Lasalle and beyond, we wish you a pleasant weekend and holiday. You deserve it too. Oh, and if you feel guilty about your eating habits this weekend, do not fear. We'll still be able to help. Really.
Entry 17: Connected
October 9, 2009
Today the sun was shining and a slight breeze made it all the more motivating to be outside. It is days like this that we simply want to go for a quick walk or even just pick up things around the yard to keep our minds alert.
As you can see, the workers have been busy as usual again with the task of installing the trusses. By 4:30PM the front and rear of the building had a good number in place, with the help of a trusty crane.
We also saw some additional deliveries in the morning to prep for more progress next week! More good news to come.
Entry 16: A Bundle of Trusses
October 8, 2009
Today saw a spatter of rain briefly in the morning, but crews were determined to at least deliver the steel trusses that will be put into place over the next several days.
To the photo at right you will see that some of the steel I-Beams have started to be put into place as well. Funny enough, after we saw the delivery take place we zoomed off to take part in a Couch Potato Race held indoors (although we would have been up to the challenge to be outdoors).
The race consisted of many 5-person teams racing large sofas at the old armouries building downtown. We were glad to win the first heat of the race but we found the most challenging part was making sure the couch we pushed stopped at the right place on the floor. Needless to say we had a blast helping raise awareness towards healthy living and at the same time learning to move living room furniture at dangerously high speeds. To see a video, click here.
Entry 15: Made of Steel
October 6, 2009
Today was a big day. And by big we mean tall. This morning the steel came in, ahead of schedule, and the first steel support was put into place. You'd think that with the construction crew all there someone would have a tissue for us but alas, no. Needless to say we were so ecstatic to see things move so quickly into place and we could have used a tissue to hide our emotions behind.
By the afternoon, over three dozen supports stood tall, as if they were standing waiting for the next phase. Of course, it will come, and very quickly we might add.
This is the week of steel, if we might call it that, since the focus is on completing the frame and getting the exterior walls started by next week. We must say, standing in the middle of the building site has an amazing effect on us. And to think, we've done this all together... with excellent feedback, an enthusiastic support crew and a bigger vision that will undoubtedly keep growing.
Entry 14: Sure Footing
October 3, 2009
When we walked around today at the construction site we felt like we just couldn't make ourselves leave. That is, until we realized that it was the mud beneath our feet from the brief rain we had Thursday night. Gladly, it was not enough to dampen our willpower to come out here, but it will certainly make things a little messy when we decide to drive back home for the day.
Regardless, things have been moving quite well despite the little patches of mud that are scattered about. By Wednesday this week, we finished pouring the needed concrete in the trenches dug earlier. On Thursday we were installing the proper footings, block by block.
We guess you could say we are officially above ground now, albeit just a few inches, depending on where you are standing.
It makes us feel that all too often we don't tend to really appreciate the foundations in buildings around us as much as we should. We know that they are there, and we know they keep the walls up and the building sound. When we think about it, this really is a pivotal moment for us, because our foundations play such a supporting role. They represent that we have thought everything through and that we are very real indeed. It is strong foundations and sure footing that will allow us to build up...and grow.
Entry 13: Building a Name
September 30, 2009
When we promised we would work hard to get Xanadu moving we didn't know it would involve painting hard to reach places. By Friday last week we erected the frame of our sign by making sure it was well grounded...and very black.
Unfortunately in December of 2007 our original sign was wounded after a windy storm sent it tumbling down. This time around we decided to wait until we could dig a deep enough structure to make this new sign count. After all, we had to show we are, of course, moving along quite well. At right you'll see one of us covering the structure in a good coat of paint. Perhaps you could argue that all of this reaching will keep us flexible and help us bend over backwards to assist you. Literally.
At any rate, we're thrilled to have the name 'Xanadu' hovering above the construction site again. These next few months will be absolutely stellar!
Entry 12: Sharing a Vision
September 27, 2009
It was easy to see everyone's face light up when the construction site became dry enough to continue our preparation plans. During this week, we dug the foundations and began the pouring process to help our future walls stay strong. (The weather has also been great!)
The foundation reaching this point is like when a growing tree gets some support to remain straight and tall. Good foundations keep us on track and form the basis for our future.
There is no doubt in our minds that everyone has been working hard these last couple of weeks. We have the sweat to prove it. In fact, we wanted to specifically thank the stupendous workers and supporters at Rosati Group. Their eager anticipation brings a smile to our faces. Or maybe it is the curiosity of just what will go on inside.
Regardless, their much-needed elbow grease is an inspiration as we move towards the next exciting milestones to come.
Entry 11: Smooth Sailing
September 22, 2009
Last week we mentioned we'd be busy at work trying to dry out the land from all that rain. Seems we were right! In fact, the preparation work will have to continue over the next couple of days until it is all set to move to the next step...laying the literal foundation.
In the photo to the left you will see the perspective from the front entrance as you look out into the parking lot. Across is the center of the new Lakeshore Oasis development set to open late Fall.
So again, we thought it would be a great view to share with you at this point in our progress. We're just so excited!
Entry 10: Ike Makes it Grow
September 15, 2009
Well the weekend certainly was a wet one, where the area saw 106 mm of rain in some parts of Windsor and Essex County over the course of several days. It simply means we'll need to be all the more busy this week cleaning up after the rainfall and getting the water off the construction site.
By Friday of last week, the land for the parking lot use was cleared (a small portion of the parking area is shown at right) and the building site was prepared with stone to start the next phase of construction.
The way we see it, the water that Ike brought our way will, as any tree, help us grow. After all, we need to support all the greenery that will be surrounding us! It is as if the rain has given us a fresher start for the next several months...and perhaps cleaner construction equipment.
Entry 9: A Vision in Motion
September 8, 2009
The name Xanadu suggests a place of great beauty, luxury and contentment. It is a promise of better things - a promise that must be kept.
We think of this next phase in our progress together as another quick growth spurt (much like the tree we are growing). In the weeks ahead, we will be excavating and paving the 0.8 mile walking track and will begin raising the exterior walls.
From that point, the pace only will get quicker.
Shown above is our vision for Xanadu Health Club, and you may notice that it is, well, unique. Over time, we will be releasing more details as to what exactly it will mean for you.
Entry 8: Real at Last
September 4, 2009
With work progressing well on the outdoor track, the last several weeks have seen us continually prepare the main grounds for the piece of paradise we are building together.
In fact, every inch of progress has been made possible by the community's commitment to something better. Something focused. Something we all hope for and can believe in. As we anticipate laying the foundation and placing the first brick, we are reminded of the road ahead - namely, being more than just a fitness center or a "gym". We'll explain more as the weeks go by and the walls begin to rise.
Entry 7: Buds of Growth
August 30, 2009
Our tree has grown over two inches over the last week after steady watering and consistent sun exposure. We decided to dig a little deeper around the tree to remove some of the old soil and rocks as well as some older roots of plants that we had previously in place.
It's great to see little buds of growth appearing over the last several days, so we'll have to keep an eye out for further growth more often.
At the Xanadu site we have continued to work on land preparation. In the meantime, we've made great strides on an exciting and unique feature of the Xanadu concept - an unprecedented 0.8 mile (over 4,220 feet) outdoor track which will be open for all to use.
Entry 6: Clearing the Land
August 22, 2009
This weekend we decided to clear some of the area around the tree so as to make room for it to thrive. It was recommended to us from area nurseries to make sure the tree is watered regularly (every two days) and that there is not too much debris surrounding it. So naturally it would make sense to take the right steps.
In the case of Xanadu, we are at this stage ourselves - making room for further growth and maximizing our use of space. At our construction site, we will be removing debris and preparing for our official groundbreaking which will be announced very shortly. This is a very exiting time for us as it means the vision created with the community is ever closer to becoming a reality. Stay tuned.
Entry 5: In the Ground
August 16, 2009
Planting the tree is a pivotal part of the growing process. Of course, the tree wouldn't reach its potential if it is not in the ground. Yet, we found that planting was the easy part compared to all the planning involved beforehand. Asking questions. Getting feedback.
We see the planting of this tree as a representation of us taking concrete steps to making Xanadu a reality. From initial ground preparation to finalizing our design of Xanadu, we know that work is certainly cut out for us in the days ahead.
When we are building a vision together with the community, it really is a promise that we are making. For instance, if we don't make the commitment to maintain what we started, than we won't get to where we need to go. So our plan from here on out is to promise that we will be different. That we will care about the journey. That we will empower ones to meet their objectives. That we are willing to grow. We can't ask a tree to water itself, now can we?
Entry 4: The Ideal Time
August 11, 2009
A spruce tree is ideally planted after June, with several months before Winter so the roots can start to take shape. After all, spruce trees are known to be quite a sight in the spring time (wink, wink).
Sometimes, people choose to plant a spruce tree too early and the drought of summer not only poses a challenge for watering but the heat could damage the growth of a small tree. So timing is everything.
At Xanadu, we've learned to get things in order before jumping the gun. It is what makes us different. After getting more than a year's worth of feedback from the community on our concept, the timing is certainly right to get in the ground. After all, we want our foundations to be strong.
Entry 3: The Ideal Place
August 7, 2009
Choosing the right place to plant the tree is not an easy task. At least for us. You see, we wanted the tree to be easily accessible so we can easily water it. We also want the tree to serve a purpose, to be functional so we can be shielded from the summer sun years down the road by putting a bench in the shade of the tree.
We also want it to be noticed, not to be hidden away for a few to appreciate, and we need the sun to be able to shine on it once and a while. It also needs room to grow. After all, we don't want to be limiting its potential.
Xanadu Health Club has been a concept that has its demands. The right location. Room to grow. Functional. Accessible. Where we've decided to go will take all these factors into account. For example, being within a short drive of Essex, Belle River, Lakeshore, Tecumseh and Windsor. Having enough parking. Using all available space in the best way possible. Quickly accessible by major routes. We're confident we got it right.
Entry 2: Taking Root
July 30, 2009
Hundreds of trees have found good homes after being distributed at the Essex Fun Fest and the Belle River Parade earlier this month. Spectators of all ages braved rain and warmer conditions to support these local events, so we thought it fitting to begin our little project together.
With that said, we've started to grow some trees of our own here at Xanadu as we want to be seeing them progress just as our supporters will over the next several months. Now if only we can find a spade.
Entry 1: An Unveiling.
July 12, 2009
Surely, we've made a promise about our plans for the future. A promise of enhancing lives through measured and encouraged growth, among other things. That is why, starting this week, we're focusing on our next logical step - seeing something grow and prosper in a very real way.
At various events this summer, hundreds of hard-working people will receive the beginnings of a spruce tree. Likely they will have questions, such as:
How will I plant it? How is it cared for? How high will it grow? Will it simply take care of itself? Are there things I can do to make it more successful?
Of course, we'll provide the answers that will point you in the right direction. Over the next coming weeks we'll be revealing what is at stake, details about a contest, tips for keeping your tree growing strong, and continued updates on the growth at Xanadu now that our vision is finalized.
We felt it was right to unveil a photo preview of Xanadu to the same community events that allowed people of all ages to believe in us and challenge us to be different. That ultimately is what this new section of our website is and will be about. We see the next several months as a team effort, one that will help you gain familiarity with our goals and at the same time help us gain familiarity with your needs. If you received a tree from us, go ahead and plant it. You'll be surprised at what we have in store for it.
